GARRETT KATO RELEASES NEW ALBUM ‘THAT LOW AND LONESOME SOUND’ ALONGSIDE 27 DATE TOUR WITH PETE MURRAY

Canadian born, Byron Bay local Garrett Kato has today released his anticipated new record, That Low and Lonesome Sound, alongside the announcement of a 27 date tour opening for Pete Murray on his extensive regional, Yours Acoustically tour through October, November and December. Kato will also be hitting the road this month to play a run of album launch shows kick starting tonight at Brunswick Hotel in Brunswick Heads, Black Bear Lodge Brisbane on the 17th, The Vanguard Sydney on the 23rd and 303 Melbourne on September 26.

New single Headlights is an anthemic, toe-tapping folk rock, anti-love song. “I’ve always loved the idea of anti love songs and having a large group of people sing along to something other than ‘I love you babe,’” says Kato.

Recorded between Kato’s home studio and 301 Studios in Byron Bay, alongside Anthony Lycenko, That Low and Lonesome Sound was two years in the making with Kato recording most songs multiple times, explaining, “I just kept adjusting them and tending to them like my garden.” The result is a dynamic album full of texture and warmth. Kato’s smooth, dreamy melodies and exquisite harmonies create a feeling of nostalgia, weaving a rich tapestry of storytelling folk gems.

Written about Kato’s relocation from Canada to Australia, “the record focuses on the journey and personal battles of letting go of a past life,” he explains, “some songs have themes which stretch further into my past, but the majority are about my new life and love in Australia… it’s basically a personal diary of manhood and letting go.”

Pumped to tour the new record, Kato will be playing his first run of September shows with his full band and will then jump straight on the road solo to open for his local Byron mate Pete Murray. ”Playing solo with just my guitar is my most comfortable mode, I love breaking hearts if I can.”

MONTAIGNE DELIVERS SPECTACULAR VIDEO FOR ‘CLIP MY WINGS’

A few weeks out from kicking off her extensive national tour, Sydney avant-pop heroine, Montaigne has delivered a fittingly spectacular video for new single, Clip My Wings.

Directed by Guy Franklin and John Gavin, the video was filmed by Edward Goldner and produced by Haley Polacik and Saskia Vaneveld at Pixel Melbourne, the team responsible for Montaigne’s Fantastic Wreck clip and works for Kimbra amongst others.

Perfectly complementing the song’s grandeur and sure to set tongues wagging for all the right reasons, the video is set in an expansive desert and shows the striking pop starlet being dramatically thrust about by unseen energies. There is falling and flying and an astoundingly commanding performance from Montaigne, not to mention a magnificent finish.

“I didn’t come up with the plotline, but I did drive the inspiration behind it visually as I had the very distinct idea of falling and flying in my head, not because of the ‘wings’ metaphor, but because I am obsessed with this video game called Kingdom Hearts – a game which formed much of my creative style,” explains Montaigne. “I referenced very particular moments in the introductory sequences from the games and Guy, John, Haley and their team turned it in to the narrative that you see. Kingdom Hearts explores dreaming, memory and connections to others in a fantastical and surreal way with which I’ve always been enamoured.”

Co-written, produced and mixed by Tony Buchen (The Preatures, Andy Bull) and recorded at Albert Studios, Clip My Wings is about the value of autonomy and standing up for what you believe in. Already receiving substantial radio support from Triple j and community radio across the country, it boasts a bigger sound for Montaigne and an even more opulent and dramatic melody than what we’ve heard from this vocally gifted songstress.

“Clip My Wings is about attempting to push back against your oppressors,” explains Montaigne. “I am resilient and have become more self-confident, I am less afraid to stand up for myself and my self-belief and I am expressing that through this song.”

Montaigne will tour Clip My Wings next month, taking her full band on the road: Neil Anderson (keys), Gus Gardener (bass) and Miles Thomas (drums). Kicking off at Jimmy’s Den in Perth on October 3, moving through to Mandurah, Sunshine Coast, Rockhampton, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Toowoomba and Mullumbimby before finishing up at the Gorgeous Festival in McLarenvale on November 28. She’ll then be jumping back on the road through January/February to support Boy & Bear on their national Limit of Love tour.

TIM WHEATLEY ‘CAST OF YESTERDAY’ ALBUM CHARTS TOP 10

After a successful month long tour of Australia playing to packed out venues, Tim Wheatley is now heading back to LA to launch his debut solo record in his current hometown on the other side of the world. The Melbourne indie alt folk troubadour’s hard work has paid off, scoring the ultimate recognition from the industry, impressing fans and critics alike with his album, Cast Of Yesterday, with the album charting at number 9 on the weekend’s ARIA country music chart and number 18 on the Australian artists chart.

Thrilled with his impressive chart results, Wheatley says, “To land in the top 10 was astounding. I would never have imagined the response we’ve had to this record.”

“It was a hectic month of shows but looking back on it, I had a blast,” beams Wheatley. “The crowds were so receptive and I think doing it solo was such an effective way to re-introduce myself as I got to know so many people that way. It was a great chance to play the record and get a sense of everyone’s favourite songs, which I’ll now take back to the States before returning home for another tour in the summer, I can’t wait to get back!”

Cast of Yesterday was recorded at Sing Sing studios in Melbourne, produced by Paul McKercher (You Am I, Sarah Blasko, Pete Murray) and mixed by Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Johnny Cash) at Capitol Studios in Hollywood. Poetically titled, Cast of Yesterday, the album was written about a range of people from Wheatley’s past – friends, heroes and villains and is a dynamic collection of songs that is sure to surprise and delight. With an alt-folk, indie Australiana and at times country feel, Cast Of Yesterday is packed with memorable melodies and a signature smooth vocal, all the while showcasing Wheatley’s impressive songwriting ability.

“Bask in the album’s warmth by giving it a listen. You won’t be disappointed” Aphra Magazine
“This is an artist who knows himself, who’s come out the other side of alter egos (Crooked Saint) and bands (Rushcutter, The Sparrows) and figured out the kind of music he needs to make. And it’s wonderful” Sounds of Oz
“The album is a carousel of rich narratives and evocative lyrics” Beat Magazine
“Nothing seems forced. It gently sucks you in. It’s not over-produced; the focus is on the singer, the song and the stories” Stack Magazine
